The Challenge

High-needs learners, many of them refugees rebuilding their lives in the UK, needed accessible, tailored English language education to support their integration, confidence and access to opportunity — often while navigating unfamiliar systems and significant personal circumstances.

My Role

As a volunteer English teacher with Kent Refugee Action Network, I delivered a communicative, specialised language course tailored to high-needs learners, implementing innovative language methods and fostering an inclusive, positive learning environment.

My Approach

Teaching designed around the learner, not the syllabus.

01

Understand Learners' Starting Points

Took time to understand each learner's needs, prior experience and circumstances before designing sessions.

02

Design a Bespoke Curriculum

Built a communicative course tailored specifically to high-needs learners, rather than adapting a standard syllabus.

03

Create an Inclusive Environment

Fostered a positive, supportive classroom where learners felt safe to participate and make mistakes.

04

Deliver & Adapt

Adjusted teaching in response to learners' progress and needs throughout the course.

The Impact

Learners built practical English language skills and confidence to support their integration — the kind of grounded, human-scale impact that shaped the community-centred approach Rose has carried into every role since.

What I Learned

This was one of the earliest projects in my career, and it's stayed with me. Working directly with high-needs learners taught me to design for real human need first, and process second — a principle that has shaped every programme I've led since.
